Phnom Penh Athletics Club's eighth 5000m/5km distance race of 2024 began at 6:10 AM, in warm, bright and humid conditions at the Olympic Stadium track. Track races are generally conducive to better times compared to the road, and this was no exception with a slew of impressive new PBs including a new all-time PPAC record over the distance. 18 runners toed the line with the prospect of 12.5 exciting and dramatic laps awaiting...

Race Report
A stellar performance from Terence was the highlight of the event, as he continues a meteoric rise in Cambodia's athletics scene. His club-record time of 16:04.68 was achieved with masterful pacing and provides other athletes a great template for quality racing and a source of inspiration!

On the women's side we saw Muyngim racing strongly to take yet another 1st place alongside Chanthy (2nd), also no stranger to a PPAC event podium, but it was newcomer Sokkeng who provided an impressive 3rd place in her debut showing!

Viphup was the youth category leader, with another strong performance from the promising athlete while
Sophal and Tes showed us the value of consistent pacing. Both athletes gave up significant leads to other runners early in the race, but remained confident in their ability to gradually make back the time back and, in the case of the former, secure a 1:36 PB!

Special mention to Rain and Somaly who secured huge PBs improving by 2:32 and 3:03 respectively, while others continue to make hard-earned incremental gains πŸ‘.

Three runners took part in their fifth club event, and it was fantastic to have several new runners join us, as we w
elcomed Hugo and Adolfo for their first Phnom Penh Athletics Club race, coming after months of hard work training with the club every week – some excellent results for their first outing!

We're always pleased to welcome people looking to get fitter through athletics and running at our weekly training sessions and races. Wishing all our runners an enjoyable Pchum Ben break, and we'll see you all back at training this week!

Analysis and Consistency
One runner recorded a sub-1.00 rated pacing consistency score in this 5000m and two more scored sub-2.00, indicative of excellent and well paced races, respectively.

The Pacing Consistency score is designed to give runners an idea of how well they have balanced their efforts across the whole race. The most evenly paced runs with ratings below 1.00 indicate excellent pacing, and the lower the number, the better, in general, for optimal performance in aerobic running events like the 3, 5 and 10km.

In the table below you can compare your pace across every 1000m split of the race, and along with the pacing consistency rating, see how it all contributes to your overall finish time, as well as an ALL NEW suggested optimal pace that could lead to potential improved times!

A special thanks as always to our volunteer officials and helpers on the morning - Jack, Craig, Sivmuyleng, Kimkheang and Meyjou as well as to our dedicated weekly training session leaders. PPAC-137 3km Road Race [8 September 2024]

The club's fourth 3km/3000m distance race of 2024 began at 6 AM sharp, with cool, overcast and breezy conditions on our Boeung Trabek road course. 13 runners toed the line for the notorious 3 km distance. Some might be intimidated by the tricky combination of speed and endurance required by the 3 km distance, but not our brave runners!

The race report and full results are below. See you soon for more fun training sessions and athletics events and we look forward to seeing everyone back for our next race on 29th September, stay tuned to our Telegram channel and Facebook page for the official announcements and MORE opportunities to qualify for the 5000m Showdown!

Race Report
The runners established their positions in the field early and there weren't a lot of changes, but a few interesting battles emerged. Mark and Bertrand hit the halfway split with just 2.5 seconds between them, but it was Mark who was able to maintain his trademark metronomic pacing, staying ahead of Bertrand at the finish to claim his first PPAC podium finish with an impressive 3rd overall and a new 3km PB by just 1 second!

Some of our race leaders related how difficult the 3km distance seemed to execute: “I started off a little too slowly, then I needed to run a very fast last kilometre” said Styvenn, 1st place M Senior – “It was very hard but I’m happy with my result.”
“Somehow it felt like I was running uphill in both directions!” – Mark, 3rd place M Senior.

The top 3 finishers also scored the best pacing consistency ratings of the morning – indicating how important pacing is for fulfilling your maximum potential.

Junior runners Tom and Soben also battled fiercely with only a second between them at the 1.5km split, but Tom ran away in the second half to establish a 1 minute lead by the finish line.

We were pleased to welcome back Bertrand after over 2 years between PPAC races, and this time bringing along his son Soben for his debut. Clearly, the athletic ability runs in the family!

Sovanndeth secured the biggest individual improvement of the day with a huge 1:31 PB (8.5% quicker!) while Sophal executed an impressive negative split strategy, speeding up significantly in the second half of the race to storm up the field and claim 2nd place F Senior and a new 3km PB by 5 seconds – "This was the 4th time I took part and I felt fresh after running", she said, adding – "at first I didn't like running but once I started running it made me more patient and more disciplined."

Congratulations to Lucas and Tom for reaching the 5 club events milestone this morning πŸ‘πŸ‘! Lucas confessed to having latched on to the wrong pacer early, going out very fast and raising a few eyebrows – “I don’t mind picking someone out and trying to match their pace. But today I picked the wrong guy!” – perhaps a sign that a faster time might be possible soon!

We were thrilled to have several new runners join us! It's fantastic to see people looking to get fitter through athletics. Everyone is welcome to join our events and weekly training sessions. Get in touch to finding out more about the best training sessions for you!

Running Roundup August 2024

Tough Trails in Kirirom
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2024 Cambodia Elephant Trail in Kirirom on 11 August. The newly redesigned course was a grueling challenge with a lot of new technical terrain and steep climbing added. The course difficulty only made the stunning mountain vistas all the more breathtaking.

Our regular Phnom Penh Athletics training group performed particularly well, with a number of strong efforts including top-10 finishes and podium placings.

Well done to our podium placers Lindsay and Tia (2nd and 3rd female – 25km). Jack and Vincent (1st and 2nd Male – 25km) and Bora (3rd Male – 12km), all regulars at our popular Thursday Threshy sessions.

Also shout-outs to Paul and Yonas for top-10 finishes in the 50km! As well as Davide and Sabine for strong finishes in the 25km and 12km respectfully!

Runners take on Marathon and more at Angkor
On 4 August, 2024, we saw Siem Reap host the 9th Angkor Empire Marathon, which celebrates the World Heritage status of the Angkor Archeological Park, with runners participating front and centre by being able to run around some of the world's most magnificent archeological sites.

Notably, some of our regular crew members took part. In the Full Marathon we had Craig, Lindsey and Tola. Craig finished in a time of 3:38:51, and a position of 43rd. Lindsey, finished in a time of 4:07:02, and a position of 7th female overall – also to be noted as Lindsey’s first ever full marathon! Tola finished his 2nd ever marathon in a time of 4:44:56. Well done to the team for conquering the marathon as this is never an easy feat – the marathon is a tricky race, and if you do not respect it, it will humble you.

In the half marathon we saw Anneliese, Lucas, Ronan and Estelle participating. This was a very first half marathon for both Ronan and Estelle. Anneliese finished in 2:22:49, Lucas in 2:19:15 followed by Ronan in 2:19:20 and Estelle in a time of 2:23:00. Well done to all who completed the half marathon!

Rumnea took part in her first ever 10km race, and finished in a time of 1:18:31. Well done to Rumnea for conquering her first ever race! Without courage and determination, one would never achieve what was once seen as impossible.

Well done to the crew, and we look forward to continuous and never-ending improvement, but most of all enjoying the process of enjoying running and being a part of our wonderful community.

PPAC-135 5km Road Race [21 July 2024]

PPAC's July 5km took place on a brand new road course near Boeung Trabek! Runners were treated to optimal conditions, as the weather stayed cool with a slight breeze and the new course offered long, straight sections of fresh bitumen.

The race report and full results are below. See you soon for more fun training sessions and athletics events including our next 5km race soon!

Results
18 runners started the race at 5:59 AM and some tight battles formed almost instantly. In the Men's category, Vantha took the lead early in the race, with Hugo, in his 30th event, sticking close behind. While Vantha managed to lead at all of the checkpoints, it was Hugo who eventually ran home as the winner, snatching the lead in the final straight with a calculated kick.

Andarge, 3rd place, continues to tempt us with his return to form. A slower start but his fierce negative split could be an ominous sign of faster things to come. Mintu Kumar impressed in his debut PPAC showing. A highly consistent, point-scoring performance in your first race is no mean feat!

In the women's field the battle was between Meyjou and Lison. Less than 2 seconds separated them at the 2km split, but it was Lison who eventually made a decisive move in the second half to run away with the win. Meyjou continued to toil hard to take a commendable 2nd place. Rounding out the women's podium was Anneliese in 3rd place with a new PB! Another great result after taking 3rd place at last month's 5K as well!

We also congratulate runners Sonissay and Sothon, for their 3km finishes. As well as Theab and Novib for partial completion of the 5km. Every runner is welcome and we look forward to seeing you continue your running journey and hope to see you at the finish line again soon!

Full Results (detailed)
Overall three runners with previously recorded 5km times set personal bests (PB), improving on their previous times by margins between 31 and 59s! In addition five runners improved their best points scores, with two runners breaking the 500-point barrier for the first time and one breaking the 300-point mark πŸ‘πŸ‘.

Pacing Analysis & Consistency

PPAC-133 3000m Track Meet [23 June 2024]

Our second 3000m track meet of 2024 set off at a timely 6:05AM in excellent conditions following overnight rain with15 runners completing the 7.5 laps in two heats between 11 to 21 minutes. A keen group runners with varying levels and experience showcased their determination and aerobic speed capacity in what was a first 3000m track race for a few, and a return to this distance for several!

The race report and full results are below. See you soon for more fun training sessions and athletics events!

Results
Jack, Meyjou and Sovannapanhaseth were the category leaders this week.
Bora recorded a huge personal best (PB), improving on his previous best previous effort by over 5m30s and four athletes improved their Best Points scores, signifying their strongest performance in any PPAC event, including a first points score for one runner!

We're always happy to see runners try out events on the track, which can seem daunting from afar however, consistent training and racing, including track, helps runners to raise their personal performance levels. This week Jack got the top spot while completing an amazing 50th event, while also training new volunteer officials to time and keep score - all of Phnom Penh Athletics is mightily proud of such dedication and commitment!

Analysis and Consistency
Consistent pace is one of the key elements to great performances in distance events on the road and the track. The analysis table and charts below allow runners to assess their pace per 1000m and per every 200m split.

The quickest 1000m and 200m splits for each runner are highlighted bold, and the quickest 400m split has the two respective 200m splits italicised.

It's often beneficial to have some additional pace available towards the end of the race that will be useful in competitive sprint finishes. In addition to the training and race practice required this also relies on not starting the race too fast. Similarly to our last 3000m outing, nine out of fifteen runners scored their quickest 200m split straight from the start signal (10/15 also scored their quickest 400m and 1000m splits the same way!). 5/15 runners managed to save their best single laps and sprint finishes to the final stretch and the same number achieved their best 1000m split in the final section.

Volunteers & Supporters
Thanks as always to our volunteer officials and helpers on the morning – special mention to Bora officiating for the first time, with Jack, Meyjou, Seavleang, Sivmuyleng and pre- and post-race support & media from Neil!

We would like to extend our gratitude to all the runners and supporters who made this running event a success and whose support allows PPAC to continue to organise community athletics activities for all.
