PPAC-126 5km Road Race [25 February 2024]

Our second 5km race of 2024 set off for a prompt 6:00 am start in cool but overcast conditions with 43 runners at the start all completing the distance between 19 and 42 minutes. We had a great mix of participants with various levels, age ranges, and backgrounds, showcasing both outstanding performance and dedication.

The race report and full results are below. See you soon for more fun training sessions and athletics events!

Results

Hugo, Muyngim, Paul and Lijee were the category leaders this week. Impressively, eleven runners with previously recorded times set personal bests (PB), improving on previous times by margins between just 0.7s and 5:54
with an average 6.6% improvement, including two U16 runners hitting sub-21 minutes, and three athletes going sub-25 for their first time in a PPAC 5km race πŸ‘.

We're always happy to see new runners try out the road 5km race, and regular runners continue to improve, with consistent finishes and PBs across all levels of performance. Several runners hit club milestones with Paul and Sophearian both taking part in their 10th event - a great sign of commitment! Runners across the whole field have completed 7.5 events on average.

Analysis and Consistency
We had an amazing ten sub-1.00 rated pacing performances and a further nine sub-2.00 in what must be one of the best collective displays of high quality running pacing in a PPAC 5km race.

The Pacing Consistency rating is designed to give runners an idea of how well they have balanced their efforts across the whole race. Ratings under 1.00 indicate excellent pacing, and the lower the number, the better, in general, for optimal performance in aerobic running events.

Overall Results

Newcomers charged onto the track, taking on the challenge of the 800m, many experiencing the thrill for the first time. Don't let the thought of middle distance races daunt you – jump in and experience the excitement firsthand – it's the best way to learn!

Winning runners in the 800m paced themselves evenly across both laps, as shown by their consistent split times. It's common to slow down on the second lap, but starting too fast makes the final 300m brutal! Congrats to all athletes for finishing strong.

The Overall Results table combines all the finishers from both heats, ranked by their overall time. The second-to-last column uses a special system called PPAC points to compare runners even when they compete in different distances or gender categories – think of it as a scoring equalizer. While sprints often make points easier to come by, sticking with middle distances can lead to impressive achievements too!
