PPAC-63 5km Road Race

Six weeks after our last 5k road race we welcomed two first timers giving us a lineup of twelve athletes looking to get back into racing shape and have a crack at one of PPAC's regular events.

29 degrees is pretty hot for a 5k race starting before 6 am, and given the context there were some great efforts all round with all twelve athletes coming in under 26 minutes and 75% well under 23 minutes.
There were three excellent PBs for James, Matt and Muyngim all of whom also scored points PBs, respectively underlining the quality of those personal performances. Six athletes hit the 500 point mark (including two female athletes in the top 5), with only Andarge breaking 700 points this week.

Matt and James's excellent PB performances were supported by highly consistent running, both recording incredibly steady times across the first two sections before accelerating to gain a few seconds each on the final lap.

Matt topped the O₂ consumption charts and had the second highest fitness factor behind Jack. All the runners hit a fitness factor of over 50, another impressive achievement.

Great to see some excellent racing again and special thanks to our helpers this week. Please join us for slightly less distance and a little bit more pace in the 3k coming up!

Developing Cambodian Athletics, One Step At A Time

photos courtesy of Tom Vosters Phnom Penh Athletics Club hosts Cambodia’s Next Top Runner 2020 Runners start the 5km road race Cambodia’s Next Top Runner (CNTR) is a competition organised by Phnom Penh Athletics Club (PPAC) to find out who is the best runner in Cambodia, combining long distance fitness, sprint speed and power, and middle-distance speed-endurance - and most importantly who has the dedication and commitment to turn up and complete the whole series of races. Our novel idea is to challenge all the runners over every track distance - to compare sprinters with long distance runners - in a single competition. PPAC-153 5km Road Race [1 March 2026]

Our first 5km race for the year was a great success, with moderate weather conditions that apparently proved to be conducive for personal bests. Race Report Our men's race was led from wire to wire by Hugo , who took another big step shaving a whopping 30s off his PB and claiming another 1st place result. Behind him, the men's chase pack of Styvenn (2nd) Paul (3rd) and Simon (4th) all battled hard and exchanged places to eventually finish within arms reach of one another and all under the 20min barrier. The women's field has been taken by storm after the debut of one of PPACs latest recruits, Dorie . Dorie masterfully executed a negative split pacing strategy. Sitting 42s behind Muyngim after the first Sokha lap, she quietly went to work in the second lap to cut the margin and take the win late. Muyngim (2nd), for her part in pushing the pace of the women's race, earned herself one of her fastest results of th...

PPAC-158 Club Showdown 5km Road Race [4 October 2026]

On Sunday 4th October, Phnom Penh Athletics Club hosted the Phnom Penh Club Showdown 5km race. This is an exciting race format where clubs compete as teams over the 5k distance. We used a cross-country style scoring system where an athlete’s finish position is the score they contribute to their team, and the lowest overall score wins. A team's first 5 male athletes (or first 3 in the women’s competition) count in scoring, though teams eligible for scoring may have more athletes entered if they wish, but not less. Race Report The format was especially well received by our fellow local running clubs with 14 clubs entering athletes. Amatak, LFRD, SheRuns, Susu, CIS, Moon Runners, Cambodian Next Generation and the Rahus Rugby Club were among the clubs that had full teams that qualified for the competition, while several other clubs entered individual athletes. The race featured a very hot start as 2...
