PPAC-151 5km Road Race [7 September 2025]

Our September PPAC 5K was well attended, with many new faces and regular attendees showing up to test out their fitness. 23 athletes lined up to start the race including 9 Phnom Penh Athletics Club members, and 9 first timers! The race began at 6:03am in good running conditions with a slight breeze.
This week we were glad to offer pacing for some of the popular time goals. Thanks to Hugo (Sub-20min pacer), Styvenn (Sub-22min pacer) and Jack (Sub-24min pacer) for their contributions. If you are interested in hitting a specific time goal at our next 5K race, let us know and we'll do our best to find a pacer if we can!

In the men's race we saw Terence get out fast, showing his unmatched speed and helping himself to an all-time road course record of 16:24. The previous record of 16:42 was set almost five years ago by Pheara Vann, so it was exciting to see the record finally fall. Terence's running is a source of inspiration for many of our athletes, and we are always pleased to see him in attendance. We also saw a strong pack of men targeting the 20-min barrier. After working together for most of the race, we saw Lee (2nd), Hugo (3rd) and Matthieu (4th) all squeeze under 20mins, while Paul (5th) followed closely behind just outside the 20-min mark. It is exciting to see such depth in the front of the pack.

The women's race was led by the familiar face of Muyngim, who started off with the 20-min pack, before eventually falling back to finish with a solid sub-22min effort. A great effort, just a week after her 2nd place performance at the Angkor Empire Full Marathon. PPAC athlete Katie (2nd) had a strong performance in her PPAC 5k debut, joining the 24-min pacing group and maintaining a very consistent pace throughout the race. Katie finished with a strong closing split, suggesting that even faster times are within reach. Despite insisting she was "not really a runner" pre-race, Anre looked every bit a real runner as she claimed 3rd place in the women's category in her first appearance at a PPAC race. A successful morning for the Walker couple, who each claimed a podium spot in their respective categories.

We also had several youth runners in this race, and we'd like to give special mention to 1st place male youth, Nattanon, and 1st place female youth, Isabella, for their impressive performances. Well done also to youth athletes Melina and Sothir for their finishes, we look forward to seeing their progress as they develop as runners!

In our results we like to provide analysis of pacing consistency, and this week we saw some particularly impressive pacing with 6 athletes scoring below-1.00 (Paul, Jack, Katie, Hugo, Chanvisith and Lee). Consistent pacing tends to be a strong indicator that an athlete is reaching their potential and is running at the optimal pace. We encourage all participants to look at the analysis below and use that to guide the race strategy for their next event.

Congratulations to two runners – Hugo and Styvenn – who both hit their 10th event milestone in this race, while three participants with previously recorded times also secured excellent PBs – Hugo (again), Isabella and Chanvisith! 👏👏👏

Our upcoming events will be a track race on Sunday 5th of October, and another Sokha 5km on Sunday 2nd of November. A reminder to the community that PPAC host races on the first Sunday of every month, alternating between track events and road 5km races.

Analysis - Splits and Pacing

The table below shows split times and average pace per km for each section of the race. The Pacing Consistency rating is designed to give runners an idea of how well they have balanced their efforts across the whole race. Generally speaking, consistent, evenly paced efforts are the best way to achieve your fastest possible time.
Ratings under 1.00 indicate excellent pacing, and the lower the number, the better, in general, for optimal performance in highly aerobic running events such as the 5km and beyond.

PPAC-147 5km Road Race [4 May 2025]

For our May 5K we were pleased to welcome several new participants for their first event with Phnom Penh Athletics Club , including 7 visiting athletes from SheRuns Club. Developing inter-club competition is one of our priorities, so this week's race was a great step forward for club-level athletics in Cambodia. The race report and full results are below. Our next race will be a track meet on 01 June. Please stay tuned to our regular channels for a race announcement. Results Craig (1st male) led from the start, putting several seconds into the chase pack on the first lap and only extending his lead from there. Running alone did not seem to affect his plan as he ran away to a new PB and a comfortable victory. Things were a little closer in the chase pack with Hugo , Mathieu and Yohann working together to push each other and keep the race honest. Eventually, it would be the experienced Mathieu who was able to...

PPAC-146 3000m & 200m Track Double-Header [6 April 2025]

For our April track meet , we had a mix of club members and guests showing up to put in some hard work and test themselves against strong competition. The 3000m is an excellent fitness test, athletes can use this distance as a benchmark and it is very helpful for setting paces for training zones or for predicting goal race paces for longer distances. The 200m is a pure speed event, and something that a lot of us forget to train for, but is always a fun race and often has exciting close finishes! Race report and full results and analysis below: Race Report In the 3000m, Hugo P. was the men's leader from the gun, demonstrating consistent pacing with a clear goal time in mind, achieving a 12.5s PB. Styvenn (2nd) earned himself a PB by shedding a whopping 23.6s off his previous best. Styvenn is one of the brave few who show up every Tuesday morning at 5AM to grind it out in our Early Bird Threshold session. Clearly...

PPAC-149 5km Road Race [6 July 2025]

For our July 5K we were pleased to welcome several new participants for their first event with Phnom Penh Athletics Club , including athletes from Sachkam  Running Club. The race report and full results are below. Please stay tuned to our regular channels for our next race announcements. Results This Sunday PPAC was back for another terrific 5K race at Sokha. In an attempt to beat the morning sun, the race started at 5:49 AM with 18 speedy runners taking the line. For this race, we were fortunate to have some PPAC members offer themselves for pacing duties; Jess (Sub-30), Mark (Sub-25) and Hugo (Sub-20). Their pacing had an obvious impact, with strong pace packs forming during the race and a number of people reaching their goals thanks to the pacing. At the front of the race, Hugo led a pack of six runners through the Park Lap running at sub-20 minute pace. The group gradually lost a few, but Paul (1st p...
