PPAC-137 3km Road Race [8 September 2024]

The club's fourth 3km/3000m distance race of 2024 began at 6 AM sharp, with cool, overcast and breezy conditions on our Boeung Trabek road course. 13 runners toed the line for the notorious 3 km distance. Some might be intimidated by the tricky combination of speed and endurance required by the 3 km distance, but not our brave runners!

The race report and full results are below. See you soon for more fun training sessions and athletics events and we look forward to seeing everyone back for our next race on 29th September, stay tuned to our Telegram channel and Facebook page for the official announcements and MORE opportunities to qualify for the 5000m Showdown!

Race Report
The runners established their positions in the field early and there weren't a lot of changes, but a few interesting battles emerged. Mark and Bertrand hit the halfway split with just 2.5 seconds between them, but it was Mark who was able to maintain his trademark metronomic pacing, staying ahead of Bertrand at the finish to claim his first PPAC podium finish with an impressive 3rd overall and a new 3km PB by just 1 second!

Some of our race leaders related how difficult the 3km distance seemed to execute: “I started off a little too slowly, then I needed to run a very fast last kilometre” said Styvenn, 1st place M Senior – “It was very hard but I’m happy with my result.”
“Somehow it felt like I was running uphill in both directions!” – Mark, 3rd place M Senior.

The top 3 finishers also scored the best pacing consistency ratings of the morning – indicating how important pacing is for fulfilling your maximum potential.

Junior runners Tom and Soben also battled fiercely with only a second between them at the 1.5km split, but Tom ran away in the second half to establish a 1 minute lead by the finish line.

We were pleased to welcome back Bertrand after over 2 years between PPAC races, and this time bringing along his son Soben for his debut. Clearly, the athletic ability runs in the family!

Sovanndeth secured the biggest individual improvement of the day with a huge 1:31 PB (8.5% quicker!) while Sophal executed an impressive negative split strategy, speeding up significantly in the second half of the race to storm up the field and claim 2nd place F Senior and a new 3km PB by 5 seconds – "This was the 4th time I took part and I felt fresh after running", she said, adding – "at first I didn't like running but once I started running it made me more patient and more disciplined."

Congratulations to Lucas and Tom for reaching the 5 club events milestone this morning πŸ‘πŸ‘! Lucas confessed to having latched on to the wrong pacer early, going out very fast and raising a few eyebrows – “I don’t mind picking someone out and trying to match their pace. But today I picked the wrong guy!” – perhaps a sign that a faster time might be possible soon!

We were thrilled to have several new runners join us! It's fantastic to see people looking to get fitter through athletics. Everyone is welcome to join our events and weekly training sessions. Get in touch to finding out more about the best training sessions for you!

Analysis and Consistency
Runners recorded two sub-1.00 rated pacing performances including one sub-0.50 rating.

The Pacing Consistency rating is designed to give runners an idea of how well they have balanced their efforts across the whole race. The most evenly paced runs with ratings below 1.00 indicate excellent pacing, and the lower the number, the better, in general, for optimal performance in aerobic running events like the 3, 5 and 10km.

In the table below you can compare your pace between the first and second halves of the race, as well the time difference between the splits, and along with the pacing consistency rating, see how it all contributes to your overall finish time!
