For our May 5K we were pleased to welcome several new participants for their first event with Phnom Penh Athletics Club, including 7 visiting athletes from SheRuns Club. Developing inter-club competition is one of our priorities, so this week's race was a great step forward for club-level athletics in Cambodia.
The race report and full results are below. Our next race will be a track meet on 01 June. Please stay tuned to our regular channels for a race announcement.
Results
Craig (1st male) led from the
start, putting several seconds into the chase pack on the first lap and only
extending his lead from there. Running alone did not seem to affect his plan
as he ran away to a new PB and a comfortable victory. Things were a little
closer in the chase pack with Hugo, Mathieu and
Yohann working together to push each other and keep the race honest.
Eventually, it would be the experienced Mathieu who was able to open up the
gap and help himself to 2nd place and a new PB, while Hugo was also able to
make it under 20-minutes and claim 3rd.
The women's race was won
by PPAC athlete Camilla who worked hard alongside the evergreen
veteran Jacques, to post a strong time and a new PB. A nice reward
for several consistent weeks of training with the club. The women's podium
was rounded out by Lou (2nd), representing SheRuns, and
Florence (3rd), newly signed PPAC athlete. Meanwhile in the U18
category, Isabella (1st) was extremely impressive with a late sprint
effort that impressed the finish line crowd.
Several more
athletes recorded big PBs including Florence, Narom and Anya and there were
a couple of milestones – bravo to Mark who took part in his 30th event with
the club, and to Jacques for completing his 10th event ππ. Jeremy &
Mark remain side-by-side in 10th and 11th on the list of most club events
completed with 31 and 30 respectively (and 12th/11th in this race)!

Pacing Analysis & Consistency
The table below shows split times and average pace per km for each
section of the race. The Pacing Consistency rating is designed to give
runners an idea of how well they have balanced their efforts across the
whole race. Generally speaking, consistent, evenly paced efforts are the best way to
achieve your fastest possible time.
Ratings below 1.00 indicate excellent pacing, and the lower the number,
the better, in general, for optimal performance in highly aerobic running
events like the 5km and beyond.
There were three top rated sub-1.00 pacing performances from Jeremy, Hugo and Todd and many best lap performances for the Sokha Lap, including Craig who moved up from 15th to 13th place on the all time list with a stunning 7:47 lap (3:34/km)!
A special thanks as always to our awesome team of volunteer officials and helpers on the morning - Meyjou, Jack, Vincent, Yonas and Bora, officiating for the first time, as well as all the weekly training session leaders!
We would like to extend our gratitude to all the club members, runners and supporters who made this running event a success and whose support allows us to continue to organise community athletics activities for all.
